Sights
The Old Town counterpoints ancient fortifications and palatial historic buildings with modern museums. The picturesque Grund area lies riverside, way below, at the base of a dramatic fortified escarpment.
Old Town
Luxembourg City’s charm is best appreciated by strolling the Chemin de la Corniche and Old Town. Buzzing Place Guillaume II, surveyed by the neoclassical Hôtel de Ville, is the city’s heart.
Grund
Many visitors find that this idyllically pretty waterside district down in the valley is their favourite part of the city. The main attraction is cafe-hopping while strolling the pedestrian lanes down from the Old Town and over to the Clausen area.
Kirchberg Plateau
EU institutions sit on a hilltop new-town area in modern steel-strutted, blue-glass towers. The plateau is edged with chunky fortification remnants and cultural attractions including art galleries, museums and concert halls.
Luxembourg City’s main shopping district is within the pedestrian zone, bordered by Blvd Royal to the north and west, Blvd Jean Ulveling to the east and Blvd Franklin Delano Roosevelt to the south. Along with high-street chains, you’ll find independent fashion, homewares, bookshops and food and wine shops. Large shopping malls are located outside the centre in neighbourhoods including Kirchberg.
Concerts bring the city alive on summer weekends, which blur into what feels like one long festival (www.summerinthecity.lu); the Blues & Jazz Rallye is a highlight. Tickets for a vast range of other concerts and events are available through Luxembourg Ticket.
